Supercard DSONEi Firmware Update Guide

So you have purchased a nice new DSi console and have updated the firmware to version 1.4 or above and now you find the Supercard DSONEi you have no longer works.

No need to panic the clever chaps on the Supercard team released an update which will let you use the Supercard DSONEi on a DSi with 1.4 firmware installed.
The update uses the header of the game Star Wars: Lethal Alliance, so the icon on the DSi main menu will change and display a Star Wars logo.

The update takes around 6-8 minutes to carry out so go put the kettle on and read on.

First of all you will need the following:

  • An empty micro SD card
  • Micro SD card USB reader
  • The Supercard DSONEi card
  • The Supercard DSONEi USB firmware updater (the black triangular gadget in the Supercard box – bet you were wondering what that was for huh)
  • The Supercard 1.1 update from here

Once you have downloaded the DSonei_Fireware_v1.1_eng.zip file save it somewhere you can get at it (perhaps make a new folder on your desktop).

The file is a .zip file, this is a compressed file and the file we are after is in the zip file so we need to extract it. If like most people you are using Windows XP/Vista/7 then you are in luck as you can extract it by simply right clicking the file and selecting “Extract All…” Or you can use winzip or winrar to extract the files.

This will prompt a new box to appear asking where you want the extracted file to go to just leave everything as it is and click Extract.

This will extract the files in a new sub folder where the zip file was.

The new folder will be called “DSonei_Fireware_v1.1_eng” and should open up in front of you if you left the “show extracted files when complete” selection box ticked.

You will now see “updateen.bin” this is the firmware file that will update the Supercard DSONEi.

Next up we need a Micro SD card and the Micro SD card USB reader, plug the Micro SD card into the reader and plug the reader into a spare USB slot on your computer.

Windows will recognise the reader and it will appear as a removable drive.

Select the “updateen.bin” and copy or move it to the SD card (removable drive).

Once the updateen.bin file is on the Micro SD card then

  • Remove the USB reader
  • Take out the Micro SD card
  • Insert the Micro SD card into the Supercard DSONEi
  • Plug the Supercard DSONEi into the triangular USB firmware updater.

After all that you are left with something like this:

Insert the firmware updater into a spare USB slot on your PC.

The light on top of the unit will start to flash red this means that the update is in progress.

Now time to drink that cup of tea and relax

Do not unplug the firmware writer until the LED light stops flashing.

Two things can happen here one good the other bad.

If all goes well the red light will stop blinking after 5-8 minutes and the light will go a solid green. this is good and means the Supercard DSONEi card has been updated to version 1.1 and will now work on a DSi with firmware 1.4 installed.

If the light goes a solid red then this means the flash failed, this could be for various reasons but things to try are:

  • Flash it again, remove the programmer then insert the programmer back into the PC and let it try flashing again (this often works).
  • Try re-downloading the updateen.bin file – sometimes files get corrupt when downloading. Once downloaded replace the file on the Micro SD card and try again.
  • Blow inside the programmer where the Supercard DSONEi plugs in, sometimes dirt and fluff can stop the upgrade (it may sound silly but it works!).

If all else fails give us a call you may have a faulty card and we should be able to replace it.

Let’s assume (as is often the case) the flash worked fine – remove the Supercard DSONEi and then download the latest software for the Supercard DSONEi from here and install that onto the Micro SD card.

Unsure how to install the Supercard DSONEi software? then follow this guide.

Once the software is installed you will notice the Supercard DSONEi Icon has been changed to that of Star Wars Lethal Alliance Ubisoft, this is by design.

Enjoy homebrew and back-ups on a DSi 1.4 console.

In this connected world we live in feel free to share this guide with other users – facebook – twitter – email – forums etc…
